OMZ Special Steels to produce new generation high-chromium rotors

OMZ Special Steels, part of OMZ Group, signed a contract with Chinese company Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment on delivery of new generation high-chromium rotors, each weighing 18 tonnes. Deliveries are scheduled to complete in the second quarter of 2013.

New generation rotors are designed for steam turbines operating at supercritical steam (SSKPP) - with over 300 atmospheres of pressure and 590-650?C. These turbines need rotors, produced of high-chromium and quite complex steels. This steel is composed of about 10% of chromium and other alloying elements, including molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, niobium and nickel. Heat treatment of rotor forgings is performed with special technology developed by OMZ experts, at elevated temperatures in the range of 1070-1100 C.

As it was previously reported, the production of new generation rotors for steam turbines operating at supercritical steam has been recently mastered by specialists of OMZ Special Steels: in August 2011 for the first time the company manufactured and delivered to Chinese company Shanghai Electric two blanks for the rotors, produced of high-chromium steels. Preliminary research work on the development of innovative products has been carried out by specialists of OMZ Izhora Research Centre, OMZ Special Steels and TSNIITMASH since 2005. The successful development of high-technology products has allowed the company to enter the market of new generation turbine manufacturers for Russia, as well as for China, CIS and Europe.
